As the world leader in platinum mining, Anglo American Platinum Limited plays a vital role in the South African economy and the company is committed to job creation through the value addition of South Africa’s minerals. Market development is a key pillar for the long term sustainability of the Company and the country and Anglo actively pursue new applications for Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), together with various local and international partners.
PGMs are used in many industrial applications, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. These include catalysts for refining processes, autocatalysts that reduce harmful emissions from vehicles and medical equipment that saves lives. Notwithstanding the current contribution of PGMs to a more energy-efficient industrial sector, we continue to work towards reducing the environmental footprint of PGMs across their life-cycle.
In the area of product development, the company has a number of programmes researching new applications and uses. Initiatives include engaging in projects with fabricator partners and local research institutions in uncovering new applications for our products and facilitate the process of through various commercial vehicles that will add value to the PGM economic chain.
While one in five manufactured products contains platinum, or has had platinum used in the production process, jewellery is by far the most glamorous end product.
In building capacity in the jewellery sector, the Company supports six training institutions, affording students the opportunity to work with platinum and to discover the exceptional qualities of the metal and the unique characteristics that make it the metal of choice for those who can afford the luxury of platinum.
The PlatAfrica design and manufacture competition, now in its 13th year, is an important annual date on the jewellery design calendar.
