Geology broadly involves the study of the earth's crust. The main task of the geologist is to advise the mining departments on characteristics of the ore body, and potential problems to be expected during exploitation of the ore body. This includes optimising mine planning to incorporate all geological features. The mine geologist must be able to map the reef development, identify the problem areas and be able to inform the mining departments of actions to be taken to prevent loss of production or decrease in expected ore body values.
Geology is a complex discipline that requires varied skills. The geologist needs to integrate an academic background with practical observations made underground or in the field.
The geologist must also have good interpersonal skills with all levels of mining personnel, including top management.
A wide variety of fields exist within the discipline of geology.
For example, activities of a geologist include the following:
In addition to a sound knowledge of geology, the geologist would need to develop a good understanding of surveying methods, mine planning, mine valuation, rock engineering and finance.
A junior geologist would normally spend the morning underground or in the field gathering information and the afternoon in an office environment plotting and processing such information onto plans and into meaningful reports. A more senior Geologist would need to make long-term predictions about the behaviour of the ore body and the grade distribution.
A career in geology provides many challenges as an attractive, rewarding and exciting career for young professionals who have an interest in earth science
